Irish woman on 7 stone weight loss: ‘I never went to fun fairs because I was afraid I wouldn’t fit in the seats’
Irish woman Laura Totton feels she has a new start in life after shedding a massive seven stone in 18 months.
The 26-year-old from Co. Armagh revealed that her weight affected her confidence and discouraged her from doing certain things with her friends.
“I was always an outgoing person first on the dance floor and last one off it but it held me back in other ways,” said Laura speaking to Independent.ie.
“I never went to funfairs as I was petrified I wouldn't fit in the seats.”
The youth care worker struggled with her weight for many years and piled on the pounds after the death of her uncle and father at a young age.
When her grandmother died four months after she was diagnosed with lung cancer, Laura felt it was really time to do something about her size.
“I put on a lot of weight after my father and uncle passed away when I was young.
“My grandmother was diagnosed and passed away with terminal lung cancer after four months and I said to myself I’m not putting on anymore weight. This is my time to lose it,” she said.
“My granny was my biggest supporter so I said I'd do it to make her proud!”
Laura revealed that she reached a breaking point when her trousers tore as she sat into the front seat of her car.
“One day I was going to work and I got in to the car and my jeans bust at the leg.
“That's something I've never told anyone before but that made me realise I had to do something,” she said.
The 26-year-old is now a size 14/16 and has radically changed her lifestyle in the past 18 months which has seen her drop more than seven stone to date.
“After my grandmother passed away I walked to help cope and after a while I joined a ladies-only gym.
“Two months later I went to Weightwatchers. I knew Weightwatchers worked because my mother had lost weight and kept it off too. I followed the plan religiously and to date have shed over seven stone,” said Laura.
Laura revealed that her weight loss has altered her life in ways she couldn’t imagine.
“I'm much more confident. I'm not afraid to go to shops and try on clothes. I love going out dancing without having to drink.
“If you’re thinking that you need to lose weight you’re not on your own. The hardest part of losing weight is deciding to do it,” said Laura.
